Wine Review : Five Stars!

Crane Label Tasting Notes
2006 Crane Brothers Brodatious Crane Ranch Vineyard Napa Valley
"Deep purple color. Lively aromas of tightly wound purple fruit, hint of vanilla. Deep and layered on the palate. Not obvious, but reined in, slowly shedding fine layers of chiseled red and currant fruit, building in breadth and intensity with air. Fine, dusty tannins on the finish, the calling card of the high skin:juice ratios of 2006. Carafe for an hour before drinking now or age for up to 7 years."

Syrah Blend :: Absolutely NOT to be missed!

Pierre Label Tasting Notes
2007 Domaine St. Pierre Vacqueyras
"A traditionally made blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that spends 12 months in oak, the powerhouse 2007 Vacqueyras boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as notes of incense, blackberries, kirsch, flowers, scorched earth, pepper, and spice. This pure, full-bodied, opulent, layered, seriously concentrated wine should drink beautifully for a decade."
91-94 points--Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

"(tasting note from cuvee in 2008) Purple/black color. Huge dark, black and blue fruit aromas, with notes of cherry liqueur, white pepper in the background. The fruit really overwhelms everything here. Incredible richness on the palate with massive, primary red and black fruit flavors. Chewy. Finishes with excellent precision and length. This one should age for quite some time. Superb."

Price Wine :: Cabernet Sauvignon

What makes the 2006 so pure, so luscious, so chiseled? Yields in 2006 were tiny, with smaller berries, more compact flavors, more explosive aromatics. Yes, the wine is still deep purple in color. But now the aromas are more currant than red fruit, the attack rich, but chiseled, with the faintly dusty tannins that are benchmark 2006. But it's the almost sneaky, opulent mid-palate that really sets this wine apart (on day 2 as much as day 1). That kernel of sweetness speaks largely of Crane's award winning Syrah, providing for the hidden plumpness that balances out all that Cabernet structure. THIS WILL SELL OUT SO MOVE QUICKLY!

Wine Deal of the Day

Goulart Label Tasting Notes
2007 Goulart The Marshall Malbec Mendoza
"The 2007 The Marshall “M” is 100% Malbec aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up a nose of toasty new oak, cinnamon, allspice, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it is rich, savory, and plush bordering on opulent. With excellent depth and grip, this substantial effort will evolve for another 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2029."
91 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Very juicy, with a lush beam of raspberry and blackberry fruit laced with fruitcake, melted licorice and sweet spice notes. The fruit lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2010. 1,500 cases made."

Cabernet Sauvignon at a low price

Levendi Label Tasting Notes from the WineAccess Travel Log
2005 Levendi Cabernet Sauvignon Sweetwater Ranch Napa Valley
"Dark purple color. Beautiful aromas of plum and boysenberry. Rich and opulent on the palate with a gorgeous velour-like mouthfeel. Fine and lively on the finish, speaking to the cool climate and the extended hang time. Day 2: While a touch less explosive on the nose, the mid-palate has put on even more weight, now filled with lush, sweet blueberry purity. The finish remains firm, balancing out all that blue-red fruit opulence. Drink now (why not??) or age for up to 7 years."

Great Wine

Jaume Label Tasting Notes
2007 Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 Cotes du Rhone
"Silky and racy, with a floral note in front of gorgeous raspberry and boysenberry fruit that's laced with graphite and red licorice notes. The long, fine-grained finish has nice buried grip."
90 points--Wine Spectator

"Deep ruby color with beautifully vibrant, bright red fruit aromas. A touch of anise. Rich, and finely layered in the mid-palate with "nordic" lift. Fine long finish: remarkable for a wine of this price. Drink now-2012. Note: This one gains weight in the glass, so give it a half hour of air before drinking."

Napa Underground

The Napa Underground (or Just Flies on the Wall)
We've known about them for a while, the four Buoncristiani brothers and their amazing Napa Valley wines that were born -- literally -- out of their parents' garage. But we didn't quite believe the story we'd heard. Let's just say, it was a bit too 'bootstrapped' for the cynics among us. So we decided to use our new found pull in the Valley to gain entry into the tasting that's reserved for just 4. We just wanted to be flies on the wall.

This is one of the hottest new wineries in Napa -- and it all began with a little known ordinance in Napa County allowing for the fermentation of wine in any building in Napa that's large enough to serve as a garage for a single automobile. The Buoncristianis may have started as home winemakers, but now -- even though their t-shirt and blue jean wardrobes haven't changed -- they've skyrocketed to the top echelon of the Napa Valley Underground.

The Buoncristiani 2006 O.P.C. is a deep, dark, voluptuous blend of four varieties. Nothing special in that? What about this? The wine is made up of over 80 micro-lots drawn from fruit harvested from 20 handpicked vineyard sites. Still not convinced? What if those vineyard sites include Larry Hyde's Carneros and Oak Knoll plantings? What about the precious Syrah and Malbec from Stagecoach set at almost 2,000 feet in elevation. And what if the full blown structure of this fabulous, Napa Valley boutique blend is due to the big, muscled Cabernet from a secret spot on Howell Mountain. O.P.C. isn't just a blend, it's one of the most sought after under-$40 wines in the Underground.

We didn't say a word until the blend had been completed, but wish we had brought a camera. We'd heard a lot about the fraternal bickering at blending time, but whatever we heard was nothing compared to what we saw (would have made for some great YouTube moments). Regardless, who can argue with the methodology, given the results?

With such small production and the Buoncristiani's new found superstar status (the Cabernet Sauvignon "Core" 2006 just got a whopping 97 points from Parker), this stuff wasn't going to be around for long. Why? Because at $40, it was wildly underpriced.

There was no bargaining here. You can't bargain when the sellers hold all the cards. But being flies on the wall paid off anyway. 75 cases of this wildly opulent, Napa Valley blockbuster have been earmarked for WineAccess customers. What other wine can you buy from Napa with this much pedigree for $35.99? Shipping included on 4 or more.

Buoncristiani Label Tasting Notes
2006 Buoncristiani O.P.C. Napa Valley Red
"A sleeper selection, the 2006 O.P.C. is a delicious, full-throttle blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot, and 8% Malbec. Possessing copious aromas of flowers, blackberries, black currants, pepper, and camphor, refreshing acid buttressing substantial flavors, a velvety texture, and good length, this hedonistic as well as intellectually satisfying 2006 can be enjoyed over the next 5-7 years."
90 points--Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
